Free Computers and Wireless Hotspot Rolled Out on Library Lover’s Day

Library Lovers DayThis February 14 was national Library Lovers Day.  What better day for Nhulunbuy Community Library to launch their new Free Computer Internet Kiosk and Wireless Hot Spot?

With collaborative support from Northern Territory Library’s technical support team and a Community Assistance Grants Program from the Nhulunbuy Corporation Ltd., a new Internet Kiosk now provides faster and more accessible Internet access for the Nhulunbuy community.

Incorporating a wireless hotspot, the Internet Kiosk now allows people to access the Internet from their own devices, using their iPad, iPhone or their own lap top within the library, as well as using the libraries computers.

As part of Library Lover’s Day, the library also promoted a range of services available to the community, such the Nhulunbuy Local History Collection and Community Stories Archive, Early Year Literacy Programs and the ongoing promotion of literacy, books and reading.

Representatives from the Nhulunbuy Corporation attended the special launch of the Internet Kiosk and joined in on Library Lover’s Day celebrations.

The Computer Internet Kiosk and Wireless Hotspot has illustrated the Nhulunbuy Community Library’s ongoing connection with the community, our community engagement and partnership with many other key groups and organisations, and our ability to work together to improve literacy, education  and other services to benefit everyone.

Library Lover’s Day allows us to promote the library, encourage literacy and reading, as well as all the other services found in the Library.  We promote books and reading to the community, and being a school library also – to the students in the school.    Our current display of new children’s books exhibits many of the new books purchased through a special Rotary Club of Nhulunbuy sponsorship of our recent Summer Holiday programs, and the “Strange, But True” themed books displayed gives benefit to children of all ages with great books to read, enjoy and learn from.

Nhulunbuy LibraryNhulunbuy, NT

Nhulunbuy is situated on the east coast of Arnhem Land on the Northern Territory side of the Gulf of Carpentaria, about 600 km east of Darwin. The town commenced in 1971 with a special town lease on Aboriginal land to service the bauxite mine. There is a population of approximately 4200 people.

The Library started it’s life in the town’s mining camps as a “library” and then through public pressure developed into a Public Library before morphing into the Nhulunbuy Community Library.  To track the existence of the Library, we followed the history of the town and traced the role of the library mainly through the newspapers and other printed information available.  Our research was incorporated in a display within the library and also placed on the Nhulunbuy Library History webpage.
